Screening Mammography

What is Mammography?

Screening MammographyScreening mammography is the gold standard for the early diagnosis of non-palpable breast cancer. Screening mammography is appropriate for asymptomatic women who have no breast symptoms. The American Cancer Society recommends women ages 35-40 years to have a baseline mammogram, every two years until the age of 40, then yearly there after. Studies have shown that early detection can increase breast cancer survival rate by 95-98%.

What to expect during your exam

During the exam, the breast is compressed for a few seconds, to spread the tissues apart and include as much of the breast on the image as possible. An average of two views of each breast is obtained. Women with implants (Augmentation) will require three views of each breast using the Eklund “push back” technique where the Implants are pushed back and the breast tissue is pulled forward.

Most women will have a normal exam, and be returned for an annual follow-up.

What is Computer Aided Detection?

CAD is a tool used to help the Radiologist identify abnormalities with in the breast. The CAD reviews the mammography image and marks any areas of suspected abnormalities. Interpretation with CAD is like having your mammogram read by two Radiologists.
