Breast Ultrasound

What is a Breast Ultrasound?

Breast CancerAlso called Sonography or Ultrasonography, is performed in conjunction with mammography, especially in the case of dense breast tissue. Since an ultrasound can distinguish between a solid mass (non-fluid filled lump) and a cyst (fluid-filled lump) this exam is frequently used to evaluate abnormalities felt or seen in the breast.

A breast ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive exam that uses sound waves to see the inside of the breast.

The role of Breast Ultrasound at X-Ray Associates of New Mexico?

We believe at the initial visit complete whole breast unilateral or bilateral ultrasound should be performed. In those cases of significant family history and/or dense breasts bilateral whole breast ultrasound should be performed. In those cases of known or suspected malignancy bilateral whole breast ultrasound including the axilla should be performed. This not infrequently provides additional pre surgical information and may find unexpected disease in the opposite breast.

How is the exam performed?

You will be asked to change into a gown. The technologist (Sonographer) will ask you to lie face up on an exam table. A special gel will be applied to your breast. The Sonographer then uses a transducer to scan over the whole breast and the area of interest. Images are obtained during the exam which is then sent to a monitor in the Radiologist reading room.

Benign Breast CystWhen will I know my results?

Just as soon as your exam is finished, the Radiologist reviews both the mammogram and Ultrasound together and you will be informed of your results either by the Radiologist or Technologist before leaving.

In women under 30 years of age, a breast ultrasound is often used as the first diagnostic exam before a mammogram.
